Decatur Depot Museum
The Decatur Depot Museum was built in 1910 by the Kansas City Southern Railroad. It is located on Highway 59 which is also known as Main Street. To visit this musuem as a train passes by while reading some of the history creates a sense of nostalgia for what the olden days were like when Decatur was more of a farming community. There are articles about the different types of fruit orchards that were in this area, as well, as an article on the train master who worked the depot the longest. Seeing the building and getting an idea of how the building was designed brings one to imagine life in the train station and what buisness must have been conducted there.
As well as the train depot, there is a cabin that was built over a 100 years ago that belonged to the Heaslets family, and there is a KCS 73D locomotive as well as a caboose.
To visit the museum, it is open on Saturdays from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in September from 10 am to 2 pm and is ran by three members of the Decatur Historical Commission. If you would like to visit the museum during a time when it is not open, please call 479-752-3912 ext 4 to set up an appointment.
