About Us
The City of Decatur Arkansas is a small community that is tucked away in the rolling foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The heart of town sits at the intersection of Arkansas State Highway 59 and Highway 102. According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decatur,_Arkansas), the community is comprised of seven different nationalities that unite to make up the diversity in this unique culture. The population grew from 1,699 in 2010 to 1,733 in 2020 and is still growing today.
The city's total area is 4.53 square miles with land comprising 4.47 square miles and water .06 square miles. It is located near a small Arkansas State Lake named Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake is a small lake that is managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (https://www.agfc.com/) and is fished mainly for catfish and bass. Only small boats with small motors are permitted. However, it is a great lake to go kayaking on as well.
Our community offers seven parks/recreation areas. Our largest park is called Veteran's Park and is located at 1105 N. Main Street (Hwy 102 West over the viaduct). Every first Saturday in September, the Chamber of Commerce hosts the Decatur Fest that usually includes music, fireworks, food, arts and craft vendors, a beauty pageant and more. The park also houses a walking trail, disc golf, a playground area, and a small monument of local veterans.
Within this park, moving towards the top of the hill, is a small picnic area known as the McCollum Picnic Area. there is a small landscape feature and a few picnic tables to enjoy your lunch at while enjoying the beautiful day.
At the top of the hill is the Edmiston Ballpark area the consists of two baseball/softball fields and one little league field, as well as soccer field for those that love "futbol."
The oldest park of Decatur is called the "Old City Park." This park is located on land that is a wedge between 2nd Street and Pool Street. This park houses a pickleball court built to regulations for tournaments, a tennis court, the public swimming pool, and a playground area.
Located on 7th Street is the Royce Johnson Park, named after a lifetime resident and long-term president of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. He was a great man who contributed warmth, greatness, and love to his community. this park houses playground equipment that includes a mommy and me swing, and a small picnic pavillion.
Want to go fishing? Head to Crystal Lake that is located north of Decatur just on the outskirts of the city limits. Although this lake is managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, there are places to picnic and enjoy the naturistic view and quietness of the wildlife. It is a great place to relax, fish from a dock, or kayak on the lake.
The end of this lake wraps around and has entries off Hwy 102 East. This area is known as Compton Ridge. This area is great for exploring and fishing.
